Pat Powers, Olympic Gold Medalist and volleyball coach, visited the ISC in Cherry Hill this past weekend for his nationwide volleyball camp. Pat and I had been exchanging emails on coaching and he invited me to assist him at the camp. I’m a big fan of his volleyball coaching techniques so I jumped at the chance to meet Pat in person and learn from one of the best.
The two-day camp started bright and early at 9am on Saturday morning. Happy to report that it was a very worthwhile experience and Pat extremely knowledgeable (not to mention a cool guy). We had a chance to talk coaching strategy, developing volleyball in the community and our experiences at the Manhattan Beach 6 Man Volleyball Tournament.
We will definitely be incorporating some of Pat’s techniques in our club practices this season. Here are some of the highlights:
- Forming the proper arm angle to hit with maximum power
- Hitting out of your approach
- Passing from the waist
- How to read and anticipate on defense
- “Survivor” – Pat’s over-correction technique
